A simple summer skincare routine with sunscreen

December 12, 2018

What should you include in your summer skincare routine?

The best year-round, basic anti-ageing skincare routine should include the following:

  • a cleanser to suit your skin type
  • a serum to deeply nurture and nourish your skin
  • an eye cream to keep unwanted crows’ feet and dark circles away
  • a day and night cream to provide essential nutrients and hydration

In spring and summer though, your daily skincare routine should also include sunscreen. Our harsh Australian climate means that we have one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world, so summer is a non-negotiable component of your skincare routine.

Protecting ourselves from damaging UVA and UVB rays with the recommended hat, shirt and sunglasses is ideal, but we can’t always guarantee we will remain covered from top to toe. Applying a natural sunscreen to frequently exposed skin is the best way to keep your skin safe and protected. Not only does the sun cause skin cancer, it is also one of the main causes of fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation, also known as age spots. So, for the ultimate anti-ageing skincare advice be sure to add a sunscreen to your daily summer skincare routine.

How much SPF do you need in your sunscreen?

Experts recommend a sun protection factor of 30 or higher. A broad spectrum sunscreen for face and body, such as Natural Instinct Invisible Natural Sunscreen SPF30 ensures you are filtering out both UVA and UVB rays. Another great option for your face is the Natural Instinct Tinted Face Sunscreen SPF30 which is lightly tinted giving you a natural glow whilst adequately protecting your delicate skin. It’s the perfect addition to your spring summer skincare routine as the 5th step.

How often should you apply sunscreen in summer?

Apply a liberal amount of sunscreen every morning to your face, hands, neck, and any areas of your body which may be exposed to the sun during the day. The recommended amount is 1 teaspoon per limb or area. Apply evenly to dry skin 20 minutes before exposure to the sun and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming, exercising or towel drying. All Natural Instinct Sunscreen’s offer hydration, broad spectrum protection from damaging UVA + UVB rays and up to 3 hours water resistant protection. Natural Instinct Invisible Sunscreen is a Zinc-based sunscreen that provides a clear finish when rubbed in thoroughly and contains nourishing, natural Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter and Vitamin E for your body. The Tinted Face Natural Sunscreen contains Rosehip Oil, Green Tea extract and Vitamin E to prevent the visible signs of ageing whilst the tint offers light coverage and evens out skin tone. Apply as often as needed, but at least two hourly. It is important to shake both sunscreen products before use to ensure the naturally derived ingredients are well combined and offer even and consistent protection.

What is the best sunscreen for sensitive skin?

The active ingredient in our sunscreen products is Zinc Oxide which is a naturally sourced mineral widely used in physical sunscreens. Natural Instinct products contain only natural ingredients and are suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. As with any skin product, patch test before you and discontinue if irritation occurs. The Natural Instinct Natural Kids Sunscreen will protect kids’ delicate skin from sun damage. The slightly different formulation goes on with a translucent white appearance, so you can see where it has been applied. Super handy for wriggling and active kids!

Why should you choose a natural sunscreen?

When buying Natural Instinct products you can be rest assured they are free from nasties such as sulphates, parabens, artificial fragrances and colours plus over 400 man-made synthetic chemicals which are potentially harmful and can be absorbed by your skin. Chemical sunscreens work differently to physical sunscreens. Our sunscreens work by creating a barrier which reflects the sun’s rays, as opposed to chemical sunscreens, which contain synthetic chemical ingredients. They absorb UVA and UVB rays and release them as heat.

When you choose a natural sunscreen you are opting to naturally repel harmful UV rays with ingredients that are safe for your skin. Why not make the switch?
